Purpose Of The Role

The Scrum Master helps the team complete the sprint successfully by making sure the process is working well, the team stays focused on the sprint goal and issues are surfaced before they become delivery problems. In practice, this means the Scrum Master supports the team by:

  • facilitating Scrum ceremonies
  • keeping sprint scope under control
  • tracking blockers and helping to unblock them
  • watching flow on the board and challenging stuck work
  • supporting clear communication across Product, Engineering and the wider team
  • helping the team improve from sprint to sprint

Experience:

7+years

How the sprint rhythm fits together:

The Scrum Master helps the team keep a steady delivery cadence across the sprint. The table below shows the core Scrum cycle and where the role is most visible.

What the Scrum Master is accountable for:

The Scrum Master is accountable for the health of the sprint process, not for personally doing all the work needed to make delivery happen.

• making sure Scrum events happen and are useful

• helping the team maintain a realistic sprint plan

• protecting the sprint from unmanaged scope change

• making blockers, risks and dependencies visible

• supporting continuous improvement through retro actions

• keeping an eye on team flow, progress and predictability

Key Responsibilities During The Sprint:

  • Run and facilitate ceremonies
  • Protect sprint scope
  • Track dependencies in collaboration with Delivery Leads, PM & EM.
  • Track blockers and stuck work
  • Support team flow and board hygiene
  • Keep an eye on incidents and urgent operational work

What the Scrum Master Should Not Own:

The Scrum Master supports delivery, but the role has limits. Keeping those boundaries clear avoids confusion:

  • Backlog ownership and prioritisation remain with the Product Manager
  • People management remains with the Engineering & Product Manager
  • Technical direction and architecture remain with Engineering Manager & Lead Engineers
  • Delivery work remains a shared responsibility of the team, not just the Scrum Master
  • Cross team dependencies remains a shared responsibility, with Scrum Master working closely with Delivery Lead on proactively managing its delivery.
  • Incident resolution remains with the relevant engineers and support rota, though the Scrum Master may help coordinate impact
